Russell and Patricia Marks
|
Russell graduated from Princeton University in 1954, where he majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked for W.R. Grace & Co. in Bolivia and Peru, managing their sugar and paper industries.
Later, he was chief operating officer of a multinational sea-products firm, and went on to become president of Phelps Dodge
International Corporation. In 1981, he became the first president of the Americas Society, a public-policy and cultural
organization involved with the entire Western Hemisphere. When he retired from the Americas Society, he joined a Princeton
classmate in an executive recruiting firm. Russell published his first novel, Nematodes, in 2008, and is working on a sequel.
His art has been exhibited in both juried and one-man shows. He also serves as president of his Princeton University Class.
Patricia graduated from Wellesley College in 1954,
where she majored in religion and married Russell a few days before graduation.
Thereafter she changed careers whenever Russell was transferred.
While he was stationed in Puerto Rico with the U.S. Army, Patricia became a fourth-grade teacher,
then business manager and, later, assistant editor of a weekly newspaper.
Her time in Bolivia and Peru was filled with volunteer work, family,
and becoming a professional historian. After returning to Princeton in 1969,
Patricia pursued graduate study in Latin American history at Princeton University,
earning her M.A. in 1972. Thereafter she was editor of scholarly publications for
the Princeton University Library and the first woman president of the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni.
When she received her Ph.D. from the University in January 2003, she became the oldest person to earn that degree from Princeton.
Her book, Deconstructing Legitimacy: Viceroys, Merchants, and the Military in Late Colonial Peru, was published in 2007.
She is at work on a second book, this one about Peruvian independence.
Patricia and Russell moved to Princeton Windrows after 21 years in their Princeton home at Constitution Hill. Since then, Russell has served as treasurer of the Princeton Windrows Condominium Association, and is vice-president of its board of trustees. Thanks to the enhanced services provided by Princeton Windrows, and its support for its residents’ independence, privacy, and choice, Patricia and Russell have time for family and friends, and to pursue their interests in history, politics, international affairs, writing, and art.
